Throughout church history, Christians have been in general agreement regarding the person and work of Christ. However, concerning the proper practice of the church there has been extensive disagreement. Witness Lee, a prolific Bible teacher, taught that a proper church is a local church, and he spent much time to study the local church and the biblical practice of the church life. In his book, Vital Factors for the Recovery of the Church Life, Witness Lee comments:

In order to know what is proper regarding the church, we need to study the Bible. I have been studying the Bible concerning the matter of the church since 1925. In this chapter I wish to present to you a brief outline of this matter. This outline is the cream of my nearly sixty years of study concerning the church. I am happy to present this outline to you.
